Dr. Naomi White
Dr. Naomi White is a family doctor in Oromocto, and implemented Velante in October 2013 – one of the first physicians in the province to do so. Her excellent experience with the EMR encouraged her to become a Peer Leader for Velante, talking with other doctors about her experience and learnings in the hopes of encouraging others to consider implementing Velante in their practice.
“I got involved with the Peer to Peer Program because I believe doctors learn well from other doctors and we have a mutual bond when it comes to how we run our practices. Every doctor is different, but we are able to learn more when we share our highs and lows and help each other improve our practices with EMRs.”
Dr. White’s entire office has embraced Velante.
“My Medical Office Assistant loves it – she is also a Peer Leader. She loves playing with the functions and making it work even better for us. Even our nurse, who had little computer experience, jumped on board immediately, and finds the program easy to use. Overall, implementation throughout the office was a smooth, easy road.”
Dr. White is now customizing her own visit templates, which she anticipates will add to her efficiency and improve her workflow. She has seen improved patient care compared to life before an EMR. “The access to the Electronic Health Record has made a big difference,” she said. Before, their paper chart system was organised like most paper charts – chronologically. “When a patient said, ‘when was my last ultrasound?’ I was rooting through a stack of paper. Now it’s a lot timelier, and nothing gets lost or forgotten.”
Some of her patients have commented on her use of the EMR, and note that they feel more comfortable knowing that their reminders are programmed into the computer. Patients can also make appointments electronically through Accession, which has been a great success so far, according to Dr. White. In fact, some of the first to sign up were a couple in their eighties.
She has also found Dragon Dictation to be an effective time-saver. “Paperwork drags doctors down and we hate that part of our job. With Dragon, I chart directly into the Velante EMR and it’s a breeze. I save a lot of time charting by using both.”
As a fee-for-service physician, cost can be a major consideration. “I have seen some savings in time, which is money in a fee-for-service environment. But I’m doing this because it improves my workflow and improve care for patients. The cost is worth the better work I can do with it.” She also puts it in perspective. “EMR is a cost, but it’s a business cost. Sometimes you pay more for a nicer office or staff. Maybe this is one of those things you pay for a better system and workflow.”
